According to Wikipedia: The three railroads that would make up the Chessie System had been closely related since the 1960s. C&O had acquired controlling interest in B&O in 1962, and the two had jointly controlled WM since 1967.

Chessie System, Inc. was a holding company that owned the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O), the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O), the Western Maryland Railway (WM), and Baltimore and Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad (B&OCT). Trains operated under the Chessie name from 1973 to 1987.

On November 1, 1980, Chessie System merged with Seaboard Coast Line Industries to form CSX Corporation. Initially, the three Chessie System railroads continued to operate separately, even after Seaboard's six Family Lines System railroads were merged into the Seaboard System Railroad on December 29, 1982. That began to change in 1983, when the WM was merged into the B&O. The Chessie image continued to be applied to new and re-painted equipment until July 1, 1986, when CSXT introduced its own paint scheme. In April 1987, the B&O was merged into the C&O. In August 1987, C&O merged into CSX Transportation, a 1986 renaming of the Seaboard System Railroad, and the Chessie System name was retired.

CSXT 3194, Honoring Our Law Enforcement locomotive, leads southbound loaded coal train C307 as it heads up the viaduct at Rahm, Indiana on the CSX Henderson Subdivision, where it crosses the Ohio River into Kentucky. It’s carrying coal loads from White Oak Mine in Dahlgren, Illinois to Plant Bowen in Stilesboro, Georgia.

From the Web: The current viaduct and bridge were built by the L&N railroad and were dedicated on the last day of 1932 at a cost of about $4 million. It replaced one erected in 1885, also built by the L&N, which at that time was the longest channel span of that type in the world at 2.3 miles long.

Canadian Pacific 8953 and 8831 lead empty potash train B244, as they pass the pond around the location known as poorhouse on the railroad, as it heads north on the Henderson Subdivision at Madisonville, Ky at sunset on August 15th, 2023.

This location is right around MP 279 on the Henderson Subdivision and got its name from the Louisville and Nashville Railway days when the Hopkins County Poorhouse stood near this location.

According to the Kentucky Historic Institutions website: In 1910 there were more than 84 thousand paupers that were enumerated in poorhouses in the United States; this was a marked increase of 3 percent compared to 1904. In Kentucky, the number of enumerated people in poorhouses in 1910 were 1,522; 871 being male and 651 being female. Of that population, 1,044 were native born, 167 were foreign born, 27 have unknown nativity, and 284 were colored, Irish and Swiss immigrants had a much high ratio of pauperism in 1910 than any other nationality.

According to the occupations of individuals admitted into poorhouses, unskilled laborers made up the highest number. Skilled trades also held a relatively considerable number as well. Women frequently were domestic servants prior to admission. A relatively large number of about two filths reported being unable to do any work of any kind. A statistically significant number of paupers during the year 1910 were consider physically or mentally defective though the number of insane and feeble-minded almshouses was on the decline in 1910. Three fourths of discharges were done so as self-supporting. Approximately 17,000 paupers died in poorhouses during 1910 a rate of 207.7 paupers per 1,000. The most common cause of death at that time was tuberculosis of the lungs.

In earlier days, poorhouses were sometimes used as temporary shelters for vagrants as well as a place of detention for petty criminals. This was often due to poorhouses being the only public agency available to offer relief, even to those who were insane, feeble-minded, or epileptic. Some communities combined poorhouses with free hospitals or infirmaries that catered to the poor.

The newly released CSX Heritage series locomotive, 1976, Conrail Quality unit, pokes its nose above the train as it runs south as the DPU on CSX M513, at Adams, Tennessee on the Henderson Subdivision, on July 31st, 2023.

DPU – Stands for Distributed Power Unit, which is a locomotive set capable of remote-control operation in conjunction with locomotive units at the train's head end. DPUs are placed in the middle or at the rear of heavy trains (such as coal, grain, soda ash and even manifest) to help climb steep grades.

According to Wikipedia: Conrail (reporting mark CR), formally the Consolidated Rail Corporation, was the primary Class I railroad in the Northeastern United States between 1976 and 1999. The trade name Conrail is a portmanteau based on the company's legal name. It continues to do business as an asset management and network services provider in three Shared Assets Areas that were excluded from the division of its operations during its acquisition by CSX Corporation and the Norfolk Southern Railway.

The federal government created Conrail to take over the potentially profitable lines of multiple bankrupt carriers, including the Penn Central Transportation Company and Erie Lackawanna Railway. After railroad regulations were lifted by the 4R Act and the Staggers Act, Conrail began to turn a profit in the 1980s and was privatized in 1987. The two remaining Class I railroads in the East, CSX Transportation, and the Norfolk Southern Railway (NS), agreed in 1997 to acquire the system and split it into two roughly equal parts (alongside three residual shared-assets areas), returning rail freight competition to the Northeast by essentially undoing the 1968 merger of the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central Railroad that created Penn Central. Following approval by the Surface Transportation Board, CSX and NS took control in August 1998, and on June 1, 1999, began operating their respective portions of Conrail.

CSX Heritage series locomotive 1982, the Seaboard System unit, heads north through Mortons Junction at Mortons Gap, Kentucky, as it leads CSX I026 northbound on the Henderson Subdivision on July 4th, 2023.

According to Wikipedia: The Seaboard System Railroad, Inc. (reporting mark SBD) was a US Class I railroad that operated from 1982 to 1986.

Since the late 1960s, Seaboard Coast Line Industries had operated the Seaboard Coast Line and its sister railroads—notably the Louisville & Nashville and Clinchfield—as the "Family Lines System". In 1980, SCLI merged with the Chessie System to create the holding company CSX Corporation; two years later, CSX merged the Family Lines railroads to create the Seaboard System Railroad.

In 1986, Seaboard renamed itself CSX Transportation, which absorbed the Chessie System's two major railroads the following year.

CSXT 3026 leads S980-07, a high/wide move of sheet metal, south on the CSX Henderson Subdivision on August 8th, 2023. There was a total of 99 bulkhead flat cars on the train, each loaded with 8-10 pieces of steel metal plates. I’m told they are bound for Panama City, Florida where the metal will be fabricated into industrial pipe at the Borusan Berg Pipe plant located there.
