Saturday Infrared photo – Drama is one of the major things I like about the look of black and white Infrared photography of trains! It produces a great look for that I love, as with this shot of empty CSX grain express train, G304 as it rounds the curve coming into downtown Mortons Gap, Kentucky shows as it heads north on the Henderson Subdivision.

CSXT 993 leads hot intermodal I028 across the Ohio River from Henderson, Kentucky as it heads north on the CSX Henderson Subdivision at Rahm, Indiana on January 4th, 2022. From here it heads down the long viaduct over the flood plain into Evansville, IN as it makes its run from Duval Yard at Jacksonville, FL to Bedford Park, IL (Chicago).

January 7th, 2023 – Episode 1 – In this week’s edited video we catch rail action between Rahm, Indiana and Mortons Gap, Kentucky along the CSX Henderson Subdivision, mostly from the air! This week we spend a lot of time in the air, where we catch southbound M503 at Mortons Gap, Ky, B207 northbound at Mortons Gap, M648 northbound at Hanson, I026 northbound at Madisonville and I025 southbound up the viaduct at Rahm, Indiana! Enjoy!
For this week I worked on my skills of shooting footage from the ground and the air on most of my trains. If you weren’t aware, drones don’t shoot audio, because all you’d hear is the sound of the motors on the drone. You have to either lay a music track in post editing, go with no audio, record with an external digital recorder or shoot with a second camera on the ground for audio.
I go with the latter, using my iPhone 14 Pro, on a tripod, and then using Adobe Premiere Pro I edit the two together, syncing the audio on the ground video with the footage from the air. In case you aren’t aware, I fly a DJI Air 2S and I match the frame rates between the two to 4K at 24fps.
Most of my Saturday videos are about 17-22 minutes long and so when I export the video I do so in full HD and not 4K. The 4k file comes out to be around 10-12 TB in size and the HD file is about 3-4 TB, which is much more manageable. This Saturday’s edited video is a bit different as it was all shot in B&W Infrared!
Not really the best time of the year to shoot Infrared as it works best when it has a lot of greenery in the scene. I have been considering doing this for awhile now and decided to take it on as a challenge to see what I could come up with during the starkness of the winter.
The videos were all shot on my Fuji XT1 which was converted to 720nm Infrared! On April 30, 2019, CSX unveiled locomotives 911 and this one, 1776. The two locomotives were created to honor the first responders and veterans. Another special unit, CSX 3194, was unveiled on August 22, 2019, in honor of the law enforcement.

CSXT 1776, Honoring our Veterans Unit, as it led CSX I028 waits at the NE of Slaughters, Kentucky
I was really doubtful I’d catch CSXT 1776, Honoring our Veterans Unit on November 30th, 2022, as it led CSX I028 out of Hopkinsville, KY, as I didn’t get notice it was coming until I finally got out of bed and that was 45 minutes after I got the message. It was passing through Hopkinsville, KY and I live about 30 minutes from there, so I figured I had missed it as they don’t usually let Intermodal sit around for very long.
Well, I was sitting here in my home office working on pictures, responding to comments and listening to the scanner when I heard I028 was coming into Madisonville, KY and it was about an hour after it left Hopkinsville, Ky! I decided to head out and see if I could catch it somewhere north of Madisonville.
I threw up a little prayer for some help on catching it (yes, I do that) and I heard the dispatcher tell them that they would be taking the siding at Slaughters, Kentucky to wait on three, yes three southbounds!
This is one of the photos I captured of CSXT 1776, Honoring our Veterans Unit, as it waits in the siding at the north end of Slaughters, Kentucky, for the three southbound trains to pass on the Henderson Subdivision on November 30th, 2022.
I found out they were doing major track work at the south end of the siding at Breton, Kentucky, which is about 7 miles north of Slaughters and trains through there were restricted to 10mph, which caused a major bottleneck. They waited at Slaughters in the siding for about an hour for B795, M513 and hot intermodal I025 to pass before he got his turn to head north. There were also about 4 other trains behind I028 waiting to move as well! Quite a bottleneck for the railroad, turned out to be a haven for photos and videos for future posts!

CSXT 7905 pulls G115 through downtown Thurmond, West Virginia as it heads east with a grain train on the New River Subdivision on November 3rd, 2022.
According to Wikipedia: Thurmond is a town in Fayette County, West Virginia, United States, on the New River. The population was five at the 2020 census. During the heyday of coal mining in the New River Gorge, Thurmond was a prosperous town with several businesses and facilities for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway.
Most of Thurmond is owned by the National Park Service for the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.
Thurmond is the least-populous municipality in West Virginia. During the June 14, 2005, city elections six of the city’s seven residents sought elected office.
