The conductor and his trainee keep a watchful eye as they do a roll-by inspection of CSX southbound M513 as they pass their rail train (W016) in the siding at Hanson, Kentucky on August 25th, 2023, on the Henderson Subdivision. 

M513 had ex-CP Rail 3018 dead in tow as its trailing unit with painted new reporting marks of SBZX, and I’ve not been able to find any information on the company. Anyone have any information to share?

I’m told they are bound for Panama City, Florida where the metal will be fabricated into industrial pipe at the Borusan Berg Pipe plant located there.

Canadian Pacific 8953 and 8831 lead empty potash train B244, as they pass the pond around the location known as poorhouse on the railroad, as it heads north on the Henderson Subdivision at Madisonville, Ky at sunset on August 15th, 2023.

This location is right around MP 279 on the Henderson Subdivision and got its name from the Louisville and Nashville Railway days when the Hopkins County Poorhouse stood near this location.

According to the Kentucky Historic Institutions website: In 1910 there were more than 84 thousand paupers that were enumerated in poorhouses in the United States; this was a marked increase of 3 percent compared to 1904. In Kentucky, the number of enumerated people in poorhouses in 1910 were 1,522; 871 being male and 651 being female. Of that population, 1,044 were native born, 167 were foreign born, 27 have unknown nativity, and 284 were colored, Irish and Swiss immigrants had a much high ratio of pauperism in 1910 than any other nationality.

According to the occupations of individuals admitted into poorhouses, unskilled laborers made up the highest number. Skilled trades also held a relatively considerable number as well. Women frequently were domestic servants prior to admission. A relatively large number of about two filths reported being unable to do any work of any kind. A statistically significant number of paupers during the year 1910 were consider physically or mentally defective though the number of insane and feeble-minded almshouses was on the decline in 1910. Three fourths of discharges were done so as self-supporting. Approximately 17,000 paupers died in poorhouses during 1910 a rate of 207.7 paupers per 1,000. The most common cause of death at that time was tuberculosis of the lungs.

In earlier days, poorhouses were sometimes used as temporary shelters for vagrants as well as a place of detention for petty criminals. CSX Heritage series locomotive 1973, the Chessie System unit, is bathed in the light of the setting sun as it rounds the curve on the north end of the siding at Kelly, Kentucky as it leads empty coal train E002, bound for Atkison Yard in Madisonville, Ky on the Henderson Subdivision on August 12th, 2013. As of this morning (13th) the train is waiting its turn to load at Warrior Coal loop, just outside Madisonville.

According to Wikipedia: The three railroads that would make up the Chessie System had been closely related since the 1960s. C&O had acquired controlling interest in B&O in 1962, and the two had jointly controlled WM since 1967.
Chessie System, Inc. was a holding company that owned the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O), the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O), the Western Maryland Railway (WM), and Baltimore and Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad (B&OCT). Trains operated under the Chessie name from 1973 to 1987.

On November 1, 1980, Chessie System merged with Seaboard Coast Line Industries to form CSX Corporation. Initially, the three Chessie System railroads continued to operate separately, even after Seaboard's six Family Lines System railroads were merged into the Seaboard System Railroad on December 29, 1982. That began to change in 1983, when the WM was merged into the B&O. The Chessie image continued to be applied to new and re-painted equipment until July 1, 1986, when CSXT introduced its own paint scheme. In April 1987, the B&O was merged into the C&O. In August 1987, C&O merged into CSX Transportation, a 1986 renaming of the Seaboard System Railroad, and the Chessie System name was retired.
