A southbound CSX I025 passes over Gum Lick Trestle, just north of Kelly, Kentucky on the Henderson Subdivision on September 2nd, 2022. This is cropped shot from my Air 2S Drone and shows the many autoracks running behind CSXT 3071 loaded with Teslas. I then moved the drone off the tracks before the train arrived at its location.
The Gum Lick name comes from the fact that the valley here is named Gum Lick Hollow and it sits between Crofton and Kelly Kentucky where it crosses over the West Fork of Pond River and is the highest and longest trestle on the CSX Henderson Subdivision. Its located between J. Knight Road grade crossing and the Cavanaugh Lane overpass.
This month this intermodal has been running with these autoracks loaded with Teslas out of California by way of Union Pacific on their way south to Florida. Todays train had 22 autoracks. The cars range in price from $46,000 $120,000, depending on the model. If you use the If you use a mid-range average price of $60,000 these 22 autoracks are carrying about $12 million dollars in Teslas!

Paducah and Louisville Railway (PAL) locomotive 4512 leads a loaded coal train south past the siding at Dawson Springs, Kentucky on August 26th, 2022. The trailing unit is an Evansville Western locomotive, which is also owned by the PAL. They picked the coal up at Warrior Coal Mine, outside Madisonville, KY. I’m not sure if it was headed to Calvert City loadout or somewhere on the Evansville Western route up in southern Indiana.
According to Wikipedia: The Paducah & Louisville Railway is a Class II railroad that operates freight service between Paducah and Louisville, Kentucky. The line is located entirely within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The 270-mile line was purchased from Illinois Central Gulf Railroad in August 1986.

CSX repainted these three-executive fleet F40PH locomotives in a paint scheme inspired by predecessor Baltimore & Ohio and a fleet of cars to finish out the train set. The city of Baltimore chartered the railroad on Feb. 28, 1827, to build west to a suitable point on the Ohio River. Ground was broken on July 4, 1828, at Carrollton, Md. By 1929 the railroad operated 5,658 miles of track and had 2,364 locomotives. In the 1970s the B&O became part of Chessie System and in the 1980s it became part of CSX.

CSX loaded military train S850 sits in the siding at the north end of Rankin, Kentucky as they meet a southbound I025 on the Henderson Subdivision on August 4th, 2022. I’m told that lately this intermodal has been running with these autoracks loaded with Teslas on their way south. Today’s train had 25 autoracks. The cars range in price from $46,000 – $120,000, depending on the model.
Military Humvees cost around $70,000 each. Upgraded humvee variants, called armored or up-armored Humvees, carry higher price tags that range from $160,000 to $220000. A lot of money being moved here, not even including the intermodal shipments!

When I was on photo assignment for the Paducah and Louisville Railway on July 8th, 2022, at Paducah, Ky I was given permission to photograph this ex-Dynegy switcher 9344, that is now lettered GMTX 527, as it sat in the north end of the yard for Progress Rail to pick it up. Not sure what’s being done to it or for who, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to photograph it.
From what I can find online: Dynegy Inc. was an electric company based in Houston, Texas, in the United States. It owned and operated several power stations in the U.S., all of which were natural gas-fueled or coal-fueled, until merging with Vistra Corp on April 9, 2018. I’m not a power guy, but I understand that it is a SW1500 with relco remote control added. It was built as PRR 7925 (SW1200) on 12/1957 and has a frame number of 4414-26.
