January 23, 2018 – CSX intermodal Q028-23 moves slowly past the north end of the siding at Nortonville, Ky, past a line of track-hoes that are positioned next to the high speed switch waiting to be installed. The switch is part of a project to connect the sidings at Romney and Nortonville, Ky together to form a new six mile two track main on the Henderson Subdivision.

December 20, 2017 – CSXT 6044 heads up ballast train C026-20 as it slowly pulls through the new interlocking at Nortonville, Ky after dropping ballast on a section of the new track 2 being installed, connecting the sidings at Romney and Nortonville into a two track main.

October 26, 2017 – With long hood forward, Norfolk Southern Railroad 8772 heads up a rail train as it sits on the Norfolk Southern/Indiana Southern diamond at Oakland City, Indiana. The engineer was waiting for the crew on the back of the train to cut a piece of rail, before moving ahead to the east to drop more rail.

November 16, 2017 – CSX MOW drops a bucket of ballast next to the tracks at Nortonville, Ky on the Henderson Subdivision. One of the switches for the new interlocking that is being installed sits in the distance close to the new southbound Nortonville signals. Crews have been working all summer to connect the north end of Romney to the south end of Nortonville to form a new section of about 6 miles of double track on the subdivision.

October 10, 2017 – Time to go to work! CSX maintenance of way crews prepare their equipment for offloading, as the sun breaks through the stormy skies, at Crofton, Ky. The crews worked between the north end of Kelly though the north end of Crofton replacing ties, upgrading crossings an other routine maintenance between 6pm and midnight, as they continue to work their way north on the Henderson Subdivision.

August 31, 2017 – This afternoon I had just got home from railfanning and was sitting on my front porch here in Richland, Ky, when Paducah and Louisville high rail trucks pulled up to the crossing in front of my house and 4 workers got out with flags in their hands. Well, I figured something different was going on and grabbed my camera and walked down the hill to the crossing.

Loram Rail Grinder 514 was working it’s way north along the PAL and it appeared to be a brand new rail grinder. My 5-year old nephew Damion called it a rail polisher! They spent several minutes as they grinded across the defect detector and crossing in front of the house, before they headed on north.

Some days things just come to me, others I have to go looking! LOL

June 1, 2017 – CSX C024-01, with CSXT 7919 as power, pulls a rail train slowly through the curve in downtown Providence, Ky as it drops a section of rail along the CSX’s Morganfield Branch before heading back north to Madisonville, Ky.

RG414 is one of Loram’s newest grinders. A railgrinder (or rail grinder) is a vehicle or train used to restore the profile and remove irregularities from worn rail track to extend its life and to improve the ride of trains using the track.
