Indiana Southern Railroad locomotive 3382 leads an empty coal train through downtown Linton, Indiana as the Indiana Railroad Santa train sits on the main so Santa can pay a visit to the kids in the community.

This event was in conjunction with their company picnic at Calvert City and the passengers were employees and their families. Here we catch them as they cross the Tennessee River passing Kentucky Dam, just north of Gilbertsville, Kentucky.

The consist was led by their 35th anniversary units PAL 2021 and 1986, followed by PAL 10, a generator car, built from an ex-L&N Milk Car that was manufactured in January 1958. Next was PAL II - lounge car or diner car from what I can find online, then PAL 1 "Bluegrass State I" business or lounge car, (ex-ICG 2, exx-IC 6, exxx-16). If anyone has more information on these cars, I’d apricate your comments. The trailing engine is PAL 2127, Salute to our Troops locomotive, which led the train heading southbound to Calvert City, KY.

Digital Photo Art - Indiana Southern Railway pulls a Indiana Power and Light load of coal northbound at Oakland City, IN.

Another load of black coal crosses over the Norfolk Southern east-west line as Indiana Southern Railroad (ISRR) 3383, 3372, 3371 and 3386 lead their train north on their Petersburg Subdivision at Oakland City, Indiana on a very cold February 13th, 2021.

They will continue their move for another 20-30 miles or so through the freezing snow and ice to the Indiana Power and Light power plant at Petersburg, Indiana. As they repeat this run 3-6 times a week from Peabody's Wildboar Mine in Lynnville, IN.

Indiana Southern Railroad operates 186 miles of track from Indianapolis to Evansville. From Mars Hill (a neighborhood on the southwest side of Indianapolis) southwest through Martinsville and Spencer to Bee Hunter in Greene County, the ISRR runs on tracks that once made up the majority of the former Indianapolis & Vincennes Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad. State Route 67 parallels the ISRR along much of this section. From Bee Hunter to Elnora the ISRR has trackage rights over the Indiana Rail Road. ISRR tracks resume from Elnora through Washington in Daviess County, Petersburg in Pike County, Oakland City in Gibson County, Elberfeld in Warrick County and Daylight in Vanderburgh County before terminating in Evansville along the former New York Central's Evansville & Indianapolis Branch.

My Railroad Photography as Art
 
My niece Kelly R Gates has nominated me to share my artwork for 10 days and to nominate another artist to do the same. My take on this challenge is to create what I consider photographic Art pieces from some of my railroad photography.
 
Now, I realize there are now AI programs out there these days that can create just about any type of art pieces for you with just words, but as most of you know I’m a visual person and all the pieces I post over the next 10 days will be created in Photoshop by me from photographs I have shot, not with AI Software.
 
I know that this type of art isn’t for everyone, but I do like to get outside the box and my comfort zone from time to time, as I think it’s good for my creative eye. I’d appreciate your constructive thoughts and comments!
 
For today’s digital photographic art piece, I’ve selected this shot of another load of black coal crossing over the Norfolk Southern east-west line as Indiana Southern Railroad (ISRR) 3383, 3372, 3371 and 3386 lead their train north on their Petersburg Subdivision at Oakland City, Indiana on a very cold February 13th, 2021.

Indiana Southern railroad locomotive 3387 leads the morning local pulls into the Algers, Winslow and Western Railway (AWW) yard (now belongs to Norfolk Southern Railway) at Oakland City, Indiana to do its interchange work on October 20th, 2022.

According to Wikipedia: The Indiana Southern Railroad (reporting mark ISRR) is a short line or Class III railroad operating in the United States state of Indiana. It began operations in 1992 as a RailTex property,[1] and was acquired by RailAmerica in 2000. RailAmerica was itself acquired by Genesee & Wyoming in December 2012.

The Algers, Winslow and Western Railway (reporting mark AWW) was a Class III short-line railroad that served the surface mining operations in Pike County, Indiana. It operated approximately 19 miles of track which reached from the coal mines west of Cato south to those at Enos Corner and ran close to the Norfolk Southern Railway and Indiana Southern Railroad. A variety of Kanawha River Terminal Railroad locomotives sit just outside the engine house in the yards at the Kanawha River Terminal (Ceredo Dock) at Ceredo, West Virginia, on November 2nd, 2022. From what I can tell, from the left is #698, 455 (high nose green) 894 & 994. Can’t read numbers on the back units behind them.

The facility and the switching railroad are owned by SunCoke Energy. A variety of first and second-generation motive power is maintained at an engine house in Ceredo, West Virginia, adjacent to the terminal.

Hoosier Southern (HOS) 468 leads the daily local as through the countryside at Buffalo City, IN and heads to Tell City, IN, after picking up its interchange work from Norfolk Southern Railway at Lincoln City, IN on October 20th, 2022. The small structures are for a local farmers chicken, which I thought made an interesting addition to the photo.

The railroad originally consisted of a 22.3-mile line between the Indiana communities of Cannelton and Santa Claus that the Port Authority purchased from Norfolk Southern in 1991. The line had been unused since the mid-1980s and Norfolk Southern was considering abandonment prior to the Port Authority's (PCPA) purchase.

PCPA's goal in obtaining and putting the Hoosier Southern line back into service was (and is) to attract new industry to Perry County. When Waupaca Foundry announced plans to build a facility just north of Tell City in 1995, the Port Authority undertook construction of a spur to that site. In 1996, an additional 2.4 miles of trackage between Santa Claus and Lincoln City was added to the HOS system. This trackage was also purchased from Norfolk Southern.

Combined with the Tell City River Port on the Ohio River at Tell City, the Hoosier Southern provides multimodal transportation to serve the needs of businesses in both Perry and Spencer counties.

Though the Hoosier Southern is no longer part of the Norfolk Southern system, it interchanges with the NS system at Lincoln City. NS gives HOS customers a direct connection to much of the eastern United States, with lines to such centers of commerce as Kansas City, Missouri and Louisville, Kentucky.

Hoosier Southern (HOS) 468 leads the daily local as through the countryside at Buffalo City, IN and heads to Tell City, IN, after picking up its interchange work from Norfolk Southern Railway at Lincoln City, IN on October 20th, 2022. The small structures are for a local farmers chicken, which I thought made an interesting addition to the photo.

The railroad originally consisted of a 22.3-mile line between the Indiana communities of Cannelton and Santa Claus that the Port Authority purchased from Norfolk Southern in 1991. The line had been unused since the mid-1980s and Norfolk Southern was considering abandonment prior to the Port Authority’s (PCPA) purchase.

PCPA’s goal in obtaining and putting the Hoosier Southern line back into service was (and is) to attract new industry to Perry County. When Waupaca Foundry announced plans to build a facility just north of Tell City in 1995, the Port Authority undertook construction of a spur to that site. In 1996, an additional 2.4 miles of trackage between Santa Claus and Lincoln City was added to the HOS system. This trackage was also purchased from Norfolk Southern.

Combined with the Tell City River Port on the Ohio River at Tell City, the Hoosier Southern provides multimodal transportation to serve the needs of businesses in both Perry and Spencer counties.

Though the Hoosier Southern is no longer part of the Norfolk Southern system, it interchanges with the NS system at Lincoln City. NS gives HOS customers a direct connection to much of the eastern United States, with lines to such centers of commerce as Kansas City, Missouri and Louisville, Kentucky.

It was acquired in March 2007 by Norfolk Southern, but still operating under the original company's name.

to Kanawha River Terminal #1100) and 1200 (GP40-2LW, built as Canadian National #9638) to Kanawha River Terminal #1100), work on moving a coal train at Ceredo, West Virginia, on November 2nd, 2022, at Kanawha River Terminal (Ceredo Dock) facility. 

According to their website: The Kanawha River Terminal Railroad is a switching operation serving the Kanawha River Terminal (Ceredo Dock) facility, situated along the Ohio River west of Huntington, West Virginia. The railroad operation handles interchange with Norfolk Southern and CSK Transportation. 

The terminal has an annual throughput capacity of nearly 20 million tons and is equipped with a rotary dumper and a barge loader, the latter of which provides volume coal loading to barges. The facility and the switching railroad are owned by SunCoke Energy. A variety of first and second-generation motive power is maintained at an engine house in Ceredo, West Virginia, adjacent to the terminal.

This event was in conjunction with their company picnic at Calvert City and the passengers were employees and their families. Here we catch them after they crossed the bridge over the Tennessee River at Kentucky Dam, north of Gilbertsville, Kentucky.

The consist was led by their 35th anniversary units PAL 2021 and 1986, followed by PAL 10, a generator car, built from an ex-L&N Milk Car that was manufactured in January 1958. Next was PAL II - lounge car or diner car from what I can find online, then PAL 1 "Bluegrass State I" business or lounge car, (ex-ICG 2, exx-IC 6, exxx-16). If anyone has more information on these cars, I’d apricate your comments. The trailing engine is PAL 2127, Salute to our Troops locomotive, which led the train heading southbound to Calvert City, KY.
