Paducah and Louisville Railways’ (PAL) newly painted 35th Anniversary engines 1986 and 2021, lead the daily local from Princeton, KY as they do their interchange work with CSX at Atkinson Yard in Madisonville, KY on July 11th, 2022. Both units were done by Progress Rails shops in Mayfield, KY.

I’m told the two engines have been painted in colors and scheme closely matching the original PAL paint scheme from 1986 and are in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Paducah and Louisville Railway.

Paducah and Louisville Railway (PAL) locomotive leads a loaded coal train south past the siding at Dawson Springs, Kentucky on August 26th, 2022. The trailing unit is an Evansville Western locomotive, which is also owned by the PAL. They picked the coal up at Warrior Coal Mine, outside Madisonville, KY. I’m not sure if it was headed to Calvert City loadout or somewhere on the Evansville Western route up in southern Indiana.

According to Wikipedia: The Paducah & Louisville Railway is a Class II railroad that operates freight service between Paducah and Louisville, Kentucky. Ex-Dynegy switcher 9344, that is now lettered GMTX 527 with, at Paducah, Kentucky

When I was on photo assignment for the Paducah and Louisville Railway on July 8th, 2022, at Paducah, Ky I was given permission to photograph this ex-Dynegy switcher 9344, that is now lettered GMTX 527, as it sat in the north end of the yard for Progress Rail to pick it up. Not sure what’s being done to it or for who, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to photograph it.

From what I can find online: Dynegy Inc. was an electric company based in Houston, Texas, in the United States. It owned and operated several power stations in the U.S., all of which were natural gas-fueled or coal-fueled, until merging with Vistra Corp on April 9, 2018. I’m not a power guy, but I understand that it is a SW1500 with relco remote control added. It was built as PRR 7925 (SW1200) on 12/1957 and has a frame number of 4414-26.

For me, this is a rare and unknown, catch of this switcher #13 operating at the Arkema plant in the industrial area in Calvert City, Kentucky on July 6th, 2022.

Rare and unknown is because after 20 years of photographing around the Calvert City industrial area I’ve never seen or knew this unit even existed! I have always assumed that the Paducah and Louisville Railway worked this plant, as it does many others in the area. It’s possible it’s fairly new at the plant, as when I look at the earth view on Google Maps, I don’t see it anywhere on the property.

It’s always nice to stumble on something different in my travels, as myself and fellow railfan Ryan Scott found on our trip to Paducah, Ky yesterday to photograph their 35th Anniversary locomotives!

I don’t have any lineage on this unit at all, and I’m not a power guy, so all I know is it is at the Arkema plant in Calvert City. It is a specialty chemicals and advanced materials company headquartered in Colombes, near Paris, France, which is organized into three business segments: Coating Solutions, Industrial Chemicals, and Performance Products.

I had hoped for a better side view so you can see both engines, but PAL doesn’t allow drones over their yard without permission now and the engines didn’t come south through the yard enough for a good side view shot. Paducah and Louisville Railway 2118 heads up the morning local on January 28, 2009 as it waits for a MOW crew to arrive at Richland, Kentucky to remove an ice laden tree from the tracks during the 2009 Ice Storm, as people around the state woke to over 2” of ice covering most of Western Kentucky.

This photo was made from the bottom of my driveway the morning of the ice storm, after I slowly made my way down the driveway to get the photo. At this time, I was still working for the Messenger Newspaper, and it ran on the front page as well on the Associated Press wire services.

It was an interesting time and my home, which is on a hill to the right out of frame, was without power for about 10 days, till I was finally able to get a generator to power the house. Of course, a day later I got the power restored, but the generator has been used several times since then when we lost power!

From what I’ve been told by folks much smarter than me when it comes to locomotive power, it appears to be either a GP7 or GP9.

If anyone has more information I'd appreciate you adding it to the comments!
