June 26, 2019 – Well, after searching for about two hours along the Nashville and Eastern railroad between and around Gordonsville and Cookeville, Tennessee I didn’t luck out and find a single train out working. I was able to catch this view of Carthage Junction at Gordonsville however, so it wasn’t a wasted trip! Photo was shot from a crossing. To the left goes into Gordonsville and the right towards Cookeville.

The Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway was a railway company operated in the southern United States in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. It began as the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad, chartered in Nashville in December 11, 1845, built to 5 ft (1,524 mm) gauge and was the first railway to operate in the state of Tennessee. By the turn of the twentieth century, the NC&StL grew into one of the most important railway systems in the southern United States. Of the 118 main line miles, approximately 109 miles of the TSRR are located in Lawrence, Giles and Maury Counties in middle Tennessee, while the remaining 9 miles are located in Lauderdale County in northwest Alabama.
The TSRR interchanges with Class I carrier CSX Transportation at Natco, Tennessee. TSRR also provides intermodal services between the railroad, river barges and trucks at its port facilities located in Florence, Alabama, at the Port of Florence. The Port of Florence is strategically located on the Tennessee River. September 9, 2017 – Southern Railway steam locomotive 630 enters the west end of Missionary Ridge Tunnel, with a loaded passenger train, during the 2017 Railfest at Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, as it heads for the station at East Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Completed in 1858 the tunnel is the primary reason TVRM runs on the three-mile section of the former Southern Railway. As railroad equipment grew too large to pass through and the single-track tunnel became a traffic jam for an otherwise double-track railroad, Southern Railway abandoned the three mile portion of the line and built a new section around the end of Missionary Ridge, avoiding the tunnel altogether.
The museum restored rails through the tunnel in 1971 and continues to use the pre-Civil War Tunnel on a daily basis.
