Sunrise at city park, Madisonville, Ky

Geese and ducks at Madisonville City Park are beginning to run out of water to swim and feed in as the sustained cold temperatures have begun to freeze lakes and ponds as in this early morning sunrise Tuesday. Weather forecasters are calling for the area’s first significant snowfall for the year, with the possibility of 2-3 inches by Thursday. – Photo by Jim Pearson

Dawson Springs High School

January 4, 2010 – Dawson Springs art teacher Cindy Crider is surrounded by salvageable wet items in the school’s art classroom Monday afternoon as she unloads another wet box. Students, volunteers and staff spent most of the morning cleaning up water in rooms that were flooded as a result of a pipe that broke in the ceiling of the library, closing the school for the day and causing damage in the library, art room, two computer classrooms and several other rooms. – Photo by Jim Pearson

Paducah and Louisville’s West Yards, Madisonville, Ky

January 3, 2010 – Heading home from church today I found this lash-up of 10 engines at West Yards in Madisonville, Ky. It was headed up by three BNSF engines with several P&L engines and several leased units. I talked to the crew that built the train and they said they had an excess of power in the yards and were moving all the engines back to Paducah, Ky. Not an everyday site around here. – Photo by Jim Pearson

Crofton, Kentucky

January 2, 2010 – Today’s photo is of the back of an old building in Crofton, Ky. I’ve passed by this location a lot of times and have always been drawn to it from a visual standpoint. I love the old brick, bikes and other stuff there is to look at. – Photo by Jim Pearson

P&L West Yards, Madisonville, Ky

I’ve decided that this year I’m going to commit to shooting a photo a day for the whole year and my plans are to try and do it with all HDR images.  January 1, 2010 Found me at West Yards in Madisonville, Ky doing one of the things I love… photographing trains. It was very cold, but the yard had a set of BNSF engines in it which was unusual and I wanted to capture their presence there. This is of course my first image for the 365 Day Photo project and it is a HDR image. I’ve decided I’m going to spend the whole project in HDR as I want to learn the process better than I have. – Photo by Jim Pearson

West Kentucky Photography Club Entry “Crowds”

"Crowds" Photo by Jim Pearson

When I set out to capture an image for the West Kentucky Photography Club’s Weekly Contest with the theme of “Crowds” I knew I wanted a low angle shot of a crowd of people that pretty much showed their legs only. I hit the mall and found several locations that gave me what I was looking for but the line at the movie theater did it best. The two people in the foreground, both in action of walking or starting to walk while the others in line stationary just worked for me. While you can see all of the folks in line instead of just their legs the two in the foreground satisfied my original concept for the photograph. Sometimes when you start out with a photo in mind, but you have to go with the flow of the image situation.

The original photo was shot in color as a RAW file with my Nikon D700. After opening the image in the Adobe RAW plugin in Photoshop I reduced the color saturation to none which removed the color from the image. Then I used the brightness, blacks, and clarity selections to fine tune the image to what I wanted. Photo was then opened in Photoshop were I used the sharpen edges before cropping the photo to size for the web. – Photo by Jim Pearson

Changes in the works

As many of you can tell I’ve redesigned my website completely from what my previous Three Oaks Photography website looked like. I hope you all enjoy the new format for my photography and will check back often to see what changes I’ve made and images I’ve added.

Also, I plan to start posting some of my favorite photos along with my thoughts on them here in my new blog, so stop by and see what’s new. – JRP
